Rasaki, a 10 year old boy from the Egun ethnicity from the Toli tribe of Badagry, lived with his parents, Mr and Mrs Sonayon (Egun language meaning, 'tomorrow will be well'), and his three siblings..2 boys and the youngest, a girl. They moved from a fishing community, in the coastal town of Badagry, known as Gbagle, situated between the City of Lagos, and the border with Benin Republic at Seme. It was cut out of Nigeria in 1863 and eventually added to the state of Lagos as part of Nigeria by the United Kingdom in 1901.
They had moved to Makoko, in Lagos Mainland area of Lagos State, close to Ebute-Meta; a water slum on the Lagos Lagoon; due to an incident beyond their control. As a result of which the whole family gave their lives to Jesus. Now she smoked fresh fish for a living.
In the beginning, things were hard for them. Rasaki had to help his father set up a Carpentry shop, even at a tender age of six. He could not attend school, because his father could not afford it. At 10 years old, he could not read nor write. One of the father's friend persuaded him to send Rasaki to school.
Nonetheless, he was an ardent footballer amongst his age mates those older. He loved the game, and would sneak away at every opportunity from his Father's shop, to play, on the open space, under the third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
On the other side of town, was a 3 year old girl named Pelumi Adetoba, from a single mother of four, from Abeokuta in Ogun state. All her four children were from different fathers.
Rasaki and Pelumi met at Kindergarten, and despite their age gap, became very good friends and inseparable.
Pelumi's mother was grateful that some big kid was protecting her daughter at school, and she would give her extra food for the boy. Hence their innocent friendship grew.
Is this the beginning of a life long relationship? Time will tell.
